Awoke to find, two women speaking Spanish in a doctor’s office. Another woman yells, “you foreigners caused all this trouble!” Spanish speaker beaten.

Awoke to be mistaken, a woman wearing Muslim clothing was shopping. A Caucasian woman began attacking her and shouts “America is only for white people”.

TW for Islamophobia, talks of violence and hate crimes.

1700% Project: one of the most moving emotion-provoking short films I’ve ever seen about Islamophobia. Watch it and realise.

I’ve reblogged this before, but I love this so much.

A protester dumped a bunch of glitter on Newt Gingrich and his wife tonight at a book-signing in Minneapolis. The man approached the couple during the event at a downtown Minneapolis hotel and showered the rainbow-colored confetti on the pair. He then yelled, “stop the hate” and “feel the rainbow,” presumably a nod to gay rights. Liberal activist Robert Erickson appears to behind the shimmery mess.

(Minneapolis) –At a book signing in Minneapolis, recently declared the hippest and gayest city in America, local activist Robert Erickson greeted 2012 GOP presidential contender and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich with a shower of rainbow glitter.
“Feel the Rainbow!” Erickson shouted. Gingrich was conducting the book signing as part of The Minnesota Family Council & Institute Annual Dinner 2011 celebration. The MFC has been an instrumental mover of a marriage inequality amendment that would enshrine discrimination in Minnesota’s state constitution.
“Since Newt is hanging with the Family Council, I figured he needed a shiny dose of Minnesota Nice to counteract the hate embraced by those who are pushing this divisive bill,” Erickson said. “Of course, he might have to explain all the glitter to his third wife, Callista.”
“Minneapolis was recently named the hippest, gayest city in America,” the young prankster said. “The latest polling by the Star Tribune shows that anti-gay hate is not going to help you get elected.”
A Minnesota Poll released Friday by the Star Tribune revealed that fifty-five percent of respondents said they oppose the anti-gay amendment while 39 percent favor a constitutional ban on gay marriage. The results were reversed from seven years ago.
Speaker Gingrich secretly bankrolled more than one-third of the $850,000 campaign to remove Iowa justices who had ruled that marriage discrimination violated the state constitution, Erickson noted. “Funding virulently anti-LGBT hate groups isn’t going to be the way to Minnesota’s heart.”
The fictional persona Robert Erickson first made national news when he infiltrated an anti-immigrant Tea Party rally, inciting the crowd to chant “Columbus Go Home!” He showed up in headlines again last summer when he poured 2,000 pennies on a table in front of Minnesota GOP Governor candidate Tom Emmer, after he proposed to cut wages for servers and waitstaff.
“Minnesotans reject discrimination in all its forms and believe in an inclusive climate that makes our city a great place to create, invent, work and play. When we achieve full marriage equality, it will be a better place to love,” Erickson observed. Local leaders have noted that the marriage amendment will hurt the state’s economy.
“Welcome to Minneapolis,” Erickson said, “Feel the rainbow, and don’t let divisive politics hit you on your way out to the airport.”

While Slashing Schools Funding, Christie Bails Out ‘American Dream’ Mall Boondoggle With $400 Million

ThinkProgress:

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) has made a name for himself as a “strict fiscal conservative,” by slashing spending. The governor has championed budget cuts that eliminated hundreds of millons of dollars in education funding and is now taking aim at public workers, wanting to instate cutbacks that could almost quadruple health care costs for public workers.

Yet there appears to be one project that Christie does not mind subsidizing to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars. For years, a group of developers have been building the Xanadu Meadowlands complex, a massive retail and entertainment complex — complete with indoor water park, skating rink, and 600-foot ski slope — that has been under construction for the past three governors. Yet despite $1.9 billion being spent on the project with little progress, Christie recently struck a deal with the company that built the Mall of America to rescue the project, at huge taxpayer expense.

Tens of thousands of students, social groups and unemployed Spaniards [have been] rallying in more than 50 cities to protest against government austerity measures and the role banks and political parties have played in the financial crisis.
Sunday’s events were organized by two activist groups under the banner of “We aren’t merchandise in the hands of politicians and bankers.”
Spain is saddled with the eurozone’s highest jobless rate of 21.3 percent with a record 4.9 million people unemployed and a sluggish economy that grew by 0.3 percent in the first quarter of the year.
The government forecasts growth of 1.3 percent this year, but the central bank and others say that prediction is optimistic.

Undocumented High School Students Walk Out In Response to HB 87 and Ban on Higher Education
TODAY’S PROTEST- Press Release
Youth Demand Equality Education on 57th Anniversary of Brown vs. Board of Education
Mableton, Georgia— May 17th, on the anniversary of landmark civil rights case Brown vs. Board of Education, hundreds of students from Pebblebrook high school will walk out of their classrooms demanding equal access to higher education.  The, mostly undocumented, students hope their walkout will send a clear signal to Gov. Deal, the Board of Regents and others who wish to prevent them from attaining a higher education;   “as undocumented youth we can no longer be afraid of those who stand against us, instead we need show them we will fight back.  We need to take a stand because if we do not do it no one else will” says Dulce Guerrero, an undocumented 12th grader at Pebblebrook high school.
WHAT:    Undocumented youth walk-out of class and rally outside school at flag poll
WHO:      Undocumented Youth and allies in grades 9 to 12 from Pebblebrook high-school & Reverend Timothy McDonald, senior pastor of the First Iconium Baptist Church
WHEN:     Tuesday, May 17th at 2:00pm at the Flag Poll
WHERE:   FLAG POLL - Pebblebrook high school, 991 Old Alabama Road, Mableton, Georgia 30126

In October of 2010 the Georgia Board of Regents made a ruling which bars all undocumented youth from its top 5 universities. The ban, unlike other states, does not even allow for undocumented youth to attend at out-of-state tuition rates. Rev. Timothy McDonald, senior pastor of the First Iconium Baptist Church states; “As we remember the historic Brown vs. Board of Education decision, we affirm that immigration is the civil rights issue for the 21st century.  We will not re-segregate our colleges and university.  America must continue its forward progress towards affirming the rights of all people.”
According to a July 2010 Migrant Policy Institute report, Dulce is just one of the estimated 74,000 undocumented youth who are currently living in Georgia.  She joins the over 2.1 million who reside in the United States. Dulce went on to say; “A ban on college is unacceptable; if our students have the brains then nothing should prevent them from attending college. I am walking out today because I want to go to college; if my teachers, my principle and my community support the values of Brown vs. Board of Education then I hope they will support us, the students who are affected by these laws.”
The students leading this action promise that it is only the first of its kind, like the action of April 5th in which 7 undocumented youth were arrested; organizers plan to continue with the direct civil disobedience actions until immigrant communities in Georgia can once again live without constant fear.

Like other Republican governors, Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder (R) has aggressively pursued an agenda to curb labor rights, cut corporate taxes, and slash funding for education. As ThinkProgress reported, Snyder’s proposed budget would cut corporate taxes by 86 percent while making the state’s already regressive tax system even worse by disproportionately increasing taxes on lower-income earners, especially retirees. The tax plan passed both houses of the state legislature last week and awaits his signature.
